It was around 7:15 am when Cynthia woke up for good after a night of fitful and sporadic sleep. As much as she wanted to attribute it to a late night, her recent diet, or anything else, she knew that it was an effect of only one thing: overwhelming guilt.

It’s not fair, Cynthia thought, lying naked on her back under the soft blankets. Jeff made me miserable for years, and made no effort towards me or our marriage. Now, I’ve finally found some happiness, however scandalous it may be, and he suddenly decides he wants to work on us? It’s not fair – not fair at all!

Although Cynthia wished to continue pouting and placing the blame on her husband, she came to realize the true source of the pain she was feeling. The fact was, her relationship with Mr. Harris was wrong. And, for the past two months, she’d been willing to overlook that wrongness – she had even considered the wrongness an extra turn-on, to be honest. But what the cloying feeling in her heart had been trying to tell her was that, ultimately, the affair was untenable.

Cynthia squeezed her eyes shut, as though the thought brought her great pain. Forcing herself to think about it, she knew that it couldn’t last. How could it? Was she just going to spend the rest of her life vacationing with and fucking Mr. Harris, while remaining in a house and a marriage with Jeff? Even if she was content with a future like that, there could be no doubt that Jeff would find out eventually, causing the whole thing to come crumbling down. No, it just wasn’t sustainable.

In a moment of clarity, Cynthia realized she only had two options moving forward: end her marriage and hope Mr. Harris would want a permanent, public relationship with her, or cut things off with Mr. Harris and rekindle her relationship with Jeff.

Both choices brought her a certain amount of despair. I can’t choose between those two options... it’s just not fair.

Feeling defeated, but not giving up, Cynthia forced herself to consider what a future with Mr. Harris would look like. Days and nights filled with satisfying sex; vacations to exotic places every month; all the money I could ever want; I would forever be the envy of every girl around...

...And yet, Cynthia knew, deep down, that Mr. Harris would never be the kind of guy to settle down. Not with her, at least. What they had was a passionate, secret affair, and that’s all they could ever have.

The truth of the situation hit her like a ton of bricks. She sunk down into the bed, as though a massive weight had just been placed upon her.

As much as it hurt, as much as every fiber of her being was calling out in defiance – she knew what had to be done.

Steeling herself, Cynthia got out of bed and got dressed, then grabbed her phone and sent a single text before gathering her things and heading out the door:

Hey, I’m coming over – I think we need to talk.
